Plan reviews are one of the most important — and often stressful — parts of the NDIS journey. In 2025, the review process looks different following the changes introduced by the 2024 Amendment Act. Here’s what you need to know.
Information current as of February 2025. This article is general information only — not NDIS, legal, or financial advice.
What is a plan review?
A plan review is when the NDIA reassesses your NDIS plan to determine what funding and supports you need going forward. Plans are typically reviewed annually, though some participants have longer plan periods.
What’s changed in 2025?
Under the new framework, plan reviews will increasingly assess your supports against the NDIS Support Lists introduced in October 2024. This means:
- Supports must fall within the approved list to be funded
- Evidence requirements may be more specific about linking supports to your qualifying impairments
- The NDIA is placing greater emphasis on mainstream services (health, education, housing) meeting their responsibilities before the NDIS funds something
Types of plan review
Scheduled review: Happens when your plan reaches its end date. The NDIA contacts you to begin the process.
Unscheduled review (change of circumstances): You can request a review at any time if your needs, goals, or circumstances have significantly changed. Examples: new diagnosis, change in living situation, support needs increasing, becoming eligible for new supports.
When should I request a review?
Consider requesting an early review if:
- Your support needs have significantly increased
- A key support has been lost or become unavailable
- You’ve moved to a new area and need different services
- You’ve achieved a major goal and need your plan updated accordingly
- Your current plan doesn’t include something you now qualify for
How to prepare for a plan review
- Gather your evidence — functional assessments, reports from allied health professionals, letters from your GP, school reports (for children)
- Document your goals — what do you want to achieve in the next plan period?
- Review your current plan — what worked? What didn’t? What changed?
- Work with your Support Coordinator — your coordinator’s role includes preparing you for plan reviews and advocating for appropriate funding
