The New NDIS Support Lists Explained

Xyston Support Coordination Team 1 September 2024 2 min read

One of the most discussed changes in the 2024 NDIS Amendment Act is the introduction of NDIS Support Lists — formal lists that clarify what your NDIS funding can and cannot pay for.

Information current as of September 2024. Support lists may be updated over time. This article is general information only — not NDIS, legal, or financial advice.

The old system: “reasonable and necessary”

Previously, NDIS funding was guided by the “reasonable and necessary” test. A support had to be reasonable and necessary given your disability, goals, and circumstances. While this provided flexibility, it also led to inconsistency — different planners and reviewers applied the test differently.

The new system: approved lists

From 3 October 2024, the NDIS operates with three categories:

1. Approved NDIS Supports A defined list of supports that can be funded under the NDIS. These include things like personal care, therapy, assistive technology, Support Coordination, and more.

2. Excluded Supports A defined list of things that cannot be funded by the NDIS — even if they relate to disability. This includes things like day-to-day living costs, medical treatments that are the responsibility of the health system, and supports that mainstream services are responsible for.

3. Replacement Supports A formal process to request an alternative if a standard approved support isn’t suitable for your specific needs. This replaces the informal process that previously existed.

What if I’m already using something not on the list?

If you have an existing plan, your current supports should not be cut off mid-plan. However, when your plan is reviewed, your funding will be reassessed against the new framework.

Your Support Coordinator’s role includes helping you understand how the new lists apply to your situation and advocating for appropriate replacement supports where needed.

Where to find the lists

The current NDIS Support Lists are published on the NDIA website at ndis.gov.au/changes-ndis-legislation. These lists are a legal instrument and can be updated over time.

If you’re unsure whether a support you’re using or planning to use is on the approved list, speak with your Support Coordinator before proceeding.
